sponsorsand dual recovery

have any of you found it difficult to find and keep sponsors because of your medication and psych issues?
we dont have many DRA programs in our area and so i find it necessary to have more than one type of sponsor. i use my AA sppnsor to work the AA protocol and technical difficulties and i use my therapist to work the steps.
any others want to share how you work your steps?

Funny you should ask that cause the sponosor I just lost touch with is a hospice nurse and one of her sponsees has Disassociative Disorder (schitzofrenia....sp?) so I thought with my GAD and panic issues that she would be great. Guess not. Maybe for people like us we need multiple outlets more than others to work the steps. At least that's what it seems like to me.

When I first got sober I worked on my dual issues seperatly I went to AA for my drinking and my therapist and DBT for my BPD. Funny thing happened after about 4 mths they kind of ran together. I still go to AA for my drinking and I still go to my therapist for my BPD and since my therapist is in the program also it is really cool since he understands no only phycho babble but also the steps.

right on john. good recovery work there. that's exactly what i do. AA is for fellowship and therapy and step work are w/ my therapist. it just works better for me that way. i believe duallies are more complicated than an AA sponsor wants to tackle. even when they are agreeable to meds and sponsorship some of our issues are just too complex and psych oriented. it's a perfect fit when your therapist has a working knowledge of the steps. do you use the DRA BB?

My first job in recovery was working for the county mental health dept. Setting up and running DRA meetings here in san fran. I didn't get into the dra bb as much but I did sponser a couple people and used it for that. Now I work full time as a frontline counselor at walden house and haven't had the time to go back to the dra meetings I set up although next week my schedule should permit it.
